Description
Stretching nearly a mile along the shores of Resurrection Bay, Seward Waterfront Park is one of the most scenically positioned campgrounds in Alaska. Operated by the City of Seward, this expansive municipal campground runs from the Alaska SeaLife Center at one end to the Small Boat Harbor at the other, placing campers within easy walking distance of virtually everything Seward has to offer.
With up to 300 campsites accommodating everything from tent campers to large RVs, the park draws visitors throughout its mid-April to late September season. Six distinct camping areas are spread across the park, each with access to picnic tables, fire rings, and restrooms with hot showers and laundry facilities. The open coastal setting means many sites have direct sightlines to the bay, where campers regularly spot harbor seals, sea otters, Steller sea lions, and the occasional humpback whale surfacing offshore. Bald eagles are a near-constant presence overhead.
The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis — no advance reservations are accepted — which means early arrival is essential during the peak summer season, particularly on weekends and around major events like the Mount Marathon Race on July 4th. Sites range from tent sites at $25 per night to water-and-electric RV hookups and premium bay-view spots at up to $70 per night. A dump station is available for self-contained RVs.
Beyond camping, Seward Waterfront Park functions as a community gathering space. A paved walking path connects the entire waterfront, linking the campground to a skate park, playground, picnic areas, and a row of historical markers that trace Seward's past as a major Alaskan port city and the original terminus of the Alaska Railroad. The devastating 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, which reshaped Seward's entire waterfront, is documented along this interpretive trail.
For visitors arriving by train on the Alaska Railroad, driving the Seward Highway, or coming in by boat, the Waterfront Park campground offers an unbeatable combination of location, value, and genuine Alaskan character — with a front-row seat to the marine life and mountain scenery that make Resurrection Bay one of the most celebrated coastal destinations in the state.
