Description

Goose Lake Park is Anchorage's most popular urban swimming destination — a 79-acre municipal park tucked between the University of Alaska Anchorage campus and the Midtown neighborhood, offering free access to a sandy swim beach on one of the city's most pleasant natural lakes. On warm summer days, the beach draws families, students, and locals looking for an easy escape without leaving the city.

The park's recreational offerings go well beyond the water. A 1.3-mile paved trail loops around the lake, well-suited for walking, jogging, and biking. Tennis and basketball courts sit alongside a sand volleyball court, covered picnic shelter, playground equipment, and a softball field available for rentals. Non-motorized small watercraft are welcome in a designated area, and fishing is permitted outside the swim zone. Seasonal paddleboat rentals are available on select summer days.

Summer Swimming

The swim beach is the anchor of Goose Lake's summer appeal. Clear lake water, a sandy shore, and easy access from the UAA Drive entrance make it a go-to destination from late May through August. Per Anchorage Parks and Recreation, swimming is at your own risk — check current posted conditions at the park before visiting. Entry to the park and beach is free.

Plan Your Visit

Goose Lake Park is open dawn to dusk; the park gate closes at 9 PM. Located near the intersection of E Northern Lights Boulevard and UAA Drive in Midtown Anchorage, with on-site parking. Dogs are welcome under standard park rules. For current programming and seasonal updates, contact Anchorage Parks and Recreation or follow them on Facebook.
