Description
Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking (AMH) has been outfitting Alaska's most serious outdoor adventurers since 1974, and the Spenard Road shop is still one of the most respected specialist gear retailers in the state. It's independently owned — taken over in 2018 by longtime employee Jason Buttrick and his wife Britta Sonerholm — and they've kept it focused on what it's always been: a true specialist's shop for mountaineering, ski touring, rock climbing, hiking, and packrafting.
The inventory reflects that focus: you'll find Arc'teryx, Black Diamond, Patagonia, MSR, and Alpacka Raft on the shelves, backed by deep Alaska-specific expertise. AMH is a natural first stop for Denali expedition teams and major Alaska climbs, where route-specific knowledge matters as much as what's in your pack. The staff are active climbers, mountaineers, and backcountry skiers — their advice on conditions, terrain, and kit is something you just can't get from a chain retailer or scrolling online.
50+ Years as an Anchorage Institution
Founded in April 1974 in Spenard, AMH has stayed put through the decades as Anchorage's retail landscape shifted around it. They support the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage, the Mountaineering Club of Alaska, and local climbing access initiatives. If you're heading into the backcountry — whether it's a day hike in Chugach State Park or a multi-week Denali expedition — this is where Anchorage's most experienced outdoor community shops, and the staff can tell you what conditions look like on the ground right now.
