Description

Multi-Lake Alpine Adventure

Williwaw Lakes Trail offers one of Anchorage's most spectacular alpine lake experiences, featuring multiple pristine mountain lakes nestled in dramatic Chugach State Park wilderness. This challenging 11.2-mile adventure rewards experienced hikers with some of Alaska's most stunning backcountry lake scenery.

Trail Details & Difficulty

**Distance**: 11.2 miles roundtrip
**Elevation Gain**: 1,800 feet
**Difficulty**: Challenging
**Best Season**: July through September (snow-free alpine access)
**Estimated Time**: 7-9 hours roundtrip

What makes this trail extraordinary? The route passes multiple alpine lakes, each offering unique mountain reflections and wilderness photography opportunities. The trail provides access to some of the most pristine backcountry terrain accessible as a day hike from Anchorage.

Access & Trailhead Information

**Trailhead Location**: Glen Alps parking area, Chugach State Park
**GPS Coordinates**: 61.1028°N, 149.6997°W
**Parking**: Large paved lot with restrooms and trail information ($5 daily parking fee)
**Getting There**: Take Hillside Drive south to Upper Huffman Road, follow signs to Glen Alps

Preparation & Safety Requirements

**Essential Gear**: Sturdy hiking boots, alpine layers, navigation tools (GPS/map), water (4+ liters), full lunch, emergency shelter, first aid kit, and bear spray. **Weather Critical**: Alpine conditions can deteriorate rapidly – start early and be prepared to turn back.

**Experience Level**: This trail's recommended for experienced hikers comfortable with route-finding and alpine terrain. **Wildlife Precautions**: Bears and mountain goats frequent this wilderness area. Practice Leave No Trace principles and don't approach wildlife.

**Photography Excellence**: Multiple lakes provide diverse compositions with changing mountain backdrops. Best light occurs during golden hour periods, but plan for full-day commitment.

**Backcountry Preparation**: Consider this trail preparation for more advanced Alaska adventures. You'll want to combine training with nearby Flattop Mountain Trail or extend adventures with professional guide services.
