Description
Twin Peaks Trail is one of the most rewarding day hikes in the Eklutna Lake area of Chugach State Park, offering dramatic elevation gain, sweeping alpine views, and the chance to spot Dall sheep in their natural habitat above the treeline. Accessed via the Glenn Highway at Mile 26.5 — then approximately 10 miles down Eklutna Lake Road to the main trailhead — the hike begins at an elevation of 900 feet and rises steeply through mixed forest before breaking out onto a broad alpine bench.
The trail covers 2.6 miles one-way to the treeline bench, gaining 1,800 feet in elevation along the way. The first major reward comes at around 30 to 45 minutes into the climb, when the forest gives way and the full panorama of Eklutna Lake unfolds below — a glacier-fed, turquoise-green gem stretching seven miles into the heart of the Chugach Range. Hikers willing to continue can push to the second alpine bench or tackle the full summit of Pepper Peak (6,398 feet), which turns the outing into a 9-mile round-trip with 4,540 feet of total elevation gain.
Above the treeline, the landscape shifts to open tundra, exposed ridgelines, and rocky slopes where Dall sheep are frequently sighted grazing or resting on the heights. The views from the upper sections encompass the entire Eklutna Valley, the surrounding Chugach peaks, and on clear days, the shimmering waters of Cook Inlet far to the west.
Twin Peaks Trail is hikeable from May through October, though early and late in the season the upper elevations may hold snow and ice. Proper footwear with ankle support and layered clothing are recommended year-round. Bears and moose are present in the forested lower sections; carry bear spray and make noise throughout the hike. Dall sheep above the treeline are best observed from a distance.
Parking at the Eklutna Lake trailhead requires a $5 day-use fee; an Alaska State Parks pass ($60/year) provides unlimited entries across the state park system. A campground, picnic area, and restrooms are available at the lakeshore, making Twin Peaks an easy base for a full day or overnight trip.
