Description
The Ulu Factory is Anchorage's working artisan manufacturing facility and one of the most genuinely distinctive visitor experiences in downtown Alaska. Located at 211 West Ship Creek Avenue — a short walk from the historic Ship Creek salmon-fishing area and the Alaska Railroad depot — the facility produces traditional Alaskan ulu knives on-site and invites visitors to watch the entire process from raw blade to finished product, free of charge, during business hours.
The ulu (pronounced "OO-loo") is a traditional Alaska Native knife with a fan-shaped or crescent blade and a handle positioned above the blade for ergonomic leverage. Used by indigenous Alaskans for thousands of years to process fish, game, and hides, the ulu has become both a practical kitchen tool and one of the most meaningful Alaska souvenirs available. The Ulu Factory has been producing ulus in Anchorage for more than 25 years, maintaining a working manufacturing floor that visitors can observe directly rather than reading about behind glass.
Tours are self-guided and conducted during business hours at no charge. Staff members are available throughout the visit to explain the blade and handle assembly process, demonstrate proper use and sharpening technique, and provide context on the history and cultural significance of the ulu in Alaska Native life. The attached gift shop carries a full range of knives in various sizes and handle materials, with prices starting around $26.95. Custom ulu options are available, and the shop also stocks other Alaskan-made products and crafts.
A summer trolley service (June through August) connects The Ulu Factory to downtown Anchorage hotels and the 4th Avenue visitor corridor — making it directly accessible for cruise passengers and hotel guests without a rental car. Summer hours are Monday through Friday 8 AM to 6 PM and Saturday through Sunday 9 AM to 6 PM. Winter hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM to 6 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday closed.
For visitors to Anchorage looking to bring home something more meaningfully Alaskan than most souvenir options allow, The Ulu Factory is the definitive stop. A functional, handcrafted knife is a better souvenir than most, and the manufacturing process is interesting enough to make the visit worthwhile even for those who leave empty-handed. It is one of the few places in downtown Anchorage where visitors can watch something being made from start to finish in real time.
