Description

Mirror Lake Municipal Park is a beloved free day-use recreation area nestled in Chugiak, about 25 miles north of Anchorage via the Glenn Highway. Managed by Eagle River/Chugiak Parks and Recreation, the park offers one of the Municipality of Anchorage's most accessible freshwater swimming spots, set against a dramatic backdrop of the Chugach Mountains.

The centerpiece is Mirror Lake itself, a shallow, clear lake roughly 1.5 miles in circumference that earns its name from the striking mountain reflections it produces on calm days. A sandy beach lines the shore, drawing families and swimmers from across the Anchorage bowl throughout the summer season. AK Paddlesports operates an on-site rental concession offering kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards for those who want to explore from the water. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, Arctic char, and Chinook salmon for anglers; electric motors are permitted with a valid permit, but gas motors are prohibited to preserve the water quality.

Beyond the water, Mirror Lake packs a full amenity list for a day outdoors. Covered pavilions and picnic tables are available — pavilions can be reserved through Eagle River Parks and Recreation — and a playground, volleyball court, and pump track add variety for families. Restrooms and free parking are on site, and the park is wheelchair accessible, making it one of the easiest open spaces to visit in the greater Anchorage area.

The park operates seasonally, with summer being the prime window for swimming and paddling. Dawn-to-dusk access aligns with Alaska's extraordinary long days — June and July can stretch to 19 hours of daylight — so there is plenty of time to fit in a swim, a paddle, and a lakeside picnic all in one visit. Admission is completely free, with no day-use fee charged.

Getting there is simple: take Glenn Highway north from Anchorage to Milepost 23.6, then follow signs for Mirror Lake Drive. The park sits just minutes off the highway, making it a practical after-work or weekend escape for Anchorage residents and a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring the Chugach foothills heading north toward the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.
