Description

Ready to explore Alaska's wilderness along a historic trail route? Dew Mound Trail offers an excellent intermediate hiking experience that combines natural beauty with rich Alaskan history. This moderately strenuous 6-mile loop trail branches off from the famous Iditarod/Crow Pass Trail and provides stunning views of Eagle River Valley while leading to the distinctive geological landmark known as Dew Mound.

The trail begins at Eagle River Nature Center and initially follows the historic Iditarod Trail south through diverse terrain including muskeg, riparian wetlands, forest, and open meadows. You'll transition from the well-known Crow Pass Trail to the more rugged Dew Mound Trail, which offers a different character - narrower paths, rootier sections, rockier terrain, and more significant elevation gain compared to the center's easier trails.

Your destination is a large glacial erratic called Dew Mound, along with beautiful Dew Lake that reflects the surrounding peaks. The trail provides multiple viewpoints of Eagle River Valley, making it perfect for photography enthusiasts and those seeking solitude in Alaska's pristine wilderness. The varied terrain keeps the hike interesting while offering glimpses of the area's geological history.

Plan approximately 4-5 hours for the complete loop, though the trail offers three return options along the way if you want to shorten your hike. This flexibility makes it perfect for intermediate hikers who want to gauge their comfort level and available time. The moderate difficulty rating means you'll get a good workout while still being accessible for most fitness levels.

Access the trailhead at Eagle River Nature Center, located at mile 12 of Eagle River Road in Eagle River Valley. The Nature Center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the trails are open year-round. Bear safety awareness is important in this pristine wilderness area, and hikers should be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather conditions.
