Crow Creek Gold Mine

Alaska's Gold Rush history at Crow Creek Mine

Description

Crow Creek Mine is one of the oldest gold mining operations in Alaska, tucked into the lush Chugach Mountains along Crow Creek Road in Girdwood — about 40 miles south of downtown Anchorage. The mine has been in continuous operation since 1898, making it one of the few places in Southcentral Alaska where visitors can connect directly with Gold Rush–era history while surrounded by genuine wilderness.

Gold panning is the main draw, and the setup is beginner-friendly. The mine provides pans, shovels, and buckets at the creek, and staff walk newcomers through the technique. The creek bed here still produces real gold — fine flake gold is common, and occasional small nuggets turn up. Most visitors spend one to two hours panning, though you can stay as long as you like during operating hours.

Beyond panning, the property itself is worth exploring. Eight original buildings from the 1896–1898 mining camp still stand on site, including bunkhouses, a meat cache, and the mine manager's cabin. Walking among them gives you a tangible sense of what life looked like for the prospectors who worked this valley more than a century ago. Informational signs throughout the property explain the history and operations of the mine.

The setting is dramatic. The mine sits in a narrow valley surrounded by peaks, glaciers, and thick spruce forest. Crow Creek itself flows through the property, and the surrounding trails offer additional hiking if you want to extend the visit. Wildlife sightings — including bears, eagles, and moose — are not uncommon in the area, so stay aware of your surroundings.

Crow Creek Mine also offers overnight stays. Options include tent camping, camper and RV spots, and a few rustic dry cabins. Staying the night lets you experience the valley in the quiet of early morning and late evening, when the light and atmosphere are at their best. Facilities are basic but functional — this is a backcountry experience, not a resort.

The mine is seasonal, typically open from mid-May through mid-September, depending on weather and road conditions. Crow Creek Road is paved for the first portion but turns to gravel as you approach the mine. Most vehicles handle it fine, though it can get muddy after rain. Parking is on-site and free.

For families, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking for an outdoor experience that goes beyond typical Anchorage activities, Crow Creek Mine delivers something genuinely unique — real gold, real history, and one of the most scenic settings in the Anchorage area.
