Description

Chugach Powder Guides is Alaska's most celebrated heli-skiing operation and one of the premier helicopter skiing experiences in North America. Founded in 1997 and based in Girdwood — roughly 50 minutes south of Anchorage — the company operates in the vast Chugach Mountains backcountry, where deep coastal snowpack and dramatic vertical terrain combine to produce conditions that draw elite skiers and snowboarders from around the world season after season.

The standard day trip delivers approximately 16,000 vertical feet of skiing across multiple helicopter laps into untouched Chugach powder, priced at approximately $1,825 per person. For those seeking a more immersive commitment, the 4-day package starting at $8,350 provides extended access to remote terrain and the kind of accumulated vertical that redefines a skier's frame of reference. Private charters are available for groups wanting exclusive access to a specific zone or line. When conditions call for an alternative, snowcat skiing and snowboarding offer a ground-based deep-powder option from the Girdwood base area.

All trips are guided by experienced Chugach mountain guides with deep familiarity with the terrain's hazards, avalanche patterns, and optimal descents. Guests must demonstrate proven off-piste skiing or snowboarding ability — Chugach Powder Guides operates at the expert level and is not a learn-to-ski program. The season runs February through April, timed to the period when the Chugach snowpack is deepest and most stable for sustained backcountry operations.

Girdwood serves as the operational base, with guests typically arriving from Anchorage along the Seward Highway — a 50-minute drive through the Chugach National Forest and along Turnagain Arm. Reservations are handled directly at reservations@cpgheli.com or by phone at (907) 783-4354. Early booking is strongly advised: the operation's international reputation and limited per-season capacity mean departure slots fill months in advance.

For skiers and snowboarders who have worked through every resort terrain park and groomed run on the continent, Chugach Powder Guides represents what lies on the other side of the boundary rope — guided access to one of the most consequential mountain ranges in the world, with snow conditions to match.
