Description

Discover one of Anchorage's most unique trail experiences at Campbell Airstrip Trail, where aviation history meets outdoor recreation. This 3.2-mile loop trail follows the route of a former WWII-era airstrip while winding through the beautiful Campbell Creek greenbelt, offering an easy, family-friendly adventure rich with local history and natural beauty.

The trail begins at Campbell Creek Science Center and follows well-maintained paths through diverse habitats including wetlands, boreal forest, and open meadows. Interpretive signs throughout the route share stories of the area's aviation heritage while highlighting the creek's important role as salmon habitat. The relatively flat terrain makes this an ideal introduction to Anchorage hiking for visitors and families.

What makes Campbell Airstrip Trail special is its blend of accessibility and education. The easy grade accommodates strollers and wheelchairs on most sections, while the proximity to Campbell Creek provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. During salmon runs, you might spot bears, eagles, and various waterfowl, making every visit a potential wildlife adventure.

Plan for 1 to 2 hours to complete the full loop, with additional time for exploring the Science Center exhibits and enjoying the peaceful creek-side environment. The trail includes several benches and viewing platforms perfect for rest stops and wildlife observation. Year-round access makes this a popular destination for winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Access the trailhead at Campbell Creek Science Center, located at 5600 Science Center Drive in south Anchorage. Free parking is available, and the Science Center offers additional educational programs about local ecology and history. The trail is open daily year-round, with the Science Center providing seasonal interpretive programs and guided walks during summer months.
