Description

Bird Ridge Trail is one of Southcentral Alaska's most rewarding day hikes, rising sharply from the Seward Highway corridor to sweeping panoramas of Turnagain Arm, the Kenai Peninsula, and the Chugach Mountains. Located approximately 25 miles south of Anchorage at Mile 101 of the Seward Highway, it is a Chugach State Park classic and consistently ranks among the most popular and memorable hikes accessible from Anchorage.

The out-and-back route covers 4.6 miles round trip with a demanding 3,200 feet of elevation gain — a sustained, steep climb that rewards hikers with some of the most dramatic alpine views in the region. The trail begins in coastal lowland forest before quickly breaking above treeline into open tundra, where sweeping views of Turnagain Arm's tidal flats and the distant peaks of the Kenai Peninsula unfold in every direction. On clear days, the panorama extends across to the volcanoes of the Alaska Range.

Bird Ridge is open from April 1 through November 30, though early and late season hiking requires caution due to variable snow and ice conditions. A $5 parking fee is charged at the trailhead, and dogs are welcome on leash. Due to its steep grade and exposed upper sections, the trail is best suited to hikers with solid fitness; trekking poles are strongly recommended.

Wildlife encounters are common: Dall sheep are frequently spotted on the rocky ridgeline above, and bears may be present during berry season in late summer. Start early to take advantage of morning light and maximize the chance of clear skies. Bird Ridge Trail is maintained by Alaska State Parks as part of the broader Chugach State Park trail network, which offers extensive hiking opportunities throughout the Anchorage area.
