Description

Tucked into the Chugach Mountains just 10 miles from downtown Anchorage, Arctic Valley Ski Area is one of the most accessible and affordable ski destinations in Alaska — and one of the most cherished. Operated by the Anchorage Ski Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Arctic Valley has been a community cornerstone for generations of Anchorage skiers and snowboarders.

The terrain spans over 500 acres, rising from a base elevation of approximately 2,500 feet to nearly 4,000 feet at Rendezvous Peak, offering stunning views of the Chugach range and Cook Inlet on clear days. Four distinct bowls serve a range of skill levels, from gentle beginner slopes near the lodge to challenging advanced runs on Chair 2. The lift infrastructure includes two chairlifts, a T-bar, and a rope tow, giving skiers and riders plenty of options for working their way up the mountain.

Snow tubing is a highlight for families and non-skiers, with a dedicated tubing lift operating Thursday through Sunday from Thanksgiving weekend through the first weekend in April. The main ski season typically runs from the second week of December through mid-April, with Saturdays and Sundays as the core operating days; Thursdays and Fridays are added during peak spring conditions in March and April.

Arctic Valley's community-first mission keeps the atmosphere approachable and affordable in a way that larger commercial resorts rarely achieve. Ski and snowboard rentals are available for adults and children (early reservation recommended), and lessons are offered for beginners and intermediates in private one- or two-hour sessions. The on-mountain lodge serves as a hub for warming up between runs and connecting with the tight-knit community of local mountain enthusiasts.

Getting to Arctic Valley from Anchorage is straightforward: take Arctic Valley Road from the Glenn Highway, a scenic drive that puts you at the base area in about 20 minutes from the city. Whether you're a seasoned alpine skier looking for quiet bowls or a family introducing young children to snow sports, Arctic Valley Ski Area delivers the kind of honest, community-run mountain experience that's increasingly rare in American skiing.
