Description
Alaska Mushing School offers an unfiltered look into the world of competitive Iditarod dog mushing, just 15 minutes north of downtown Anchorage in Chugiak. Home to active Iditarod racers and their championship sled dog teams, this is far more than a tourist attraction — it is a working kennel where race strategy is devised, training regimens are carried out, and the legacy of Alaska's greatest race is lived daily.
The centerpiece experience is the Iditarod Kennel Tour ($59 per person), available year-round for all ages. Lasting 90 minutes, the tour takes guests inside a genuine racing kennel to meet champion sled dogs, learn about the dogs' diet, training, and care, and hear firsthand stories from veteran Iditarod racers — gathered inside a warm, comfortable yurt on cooler days. It is the most accessible way to understand the culture and commitment behind Alaska's most famous race.
In winter, the school offers progressively immersive experiences for those who want to go further. The Short Dog Sled Ride ($119 per person) covers a 3-mile trail in 45 minutes; the Classic Dog Sled Ride ($199 per person) spans 6 miles over 90 minutes. Night Dog Sledding ($249 per person) adds a three-hour evening adventure under Alaska's dark sky and, in season, a chance at northern lights. For the most ambitious visitors, the Half-Day Mushing School (from $279 per person, ages 16 and up) puts guests behind the sled driving their own dog team, guided by professional mushers throughout.
All winter experiences include outerwear. Private group times are available. Open daily 9 AM to 5 PM. Exact driving directions are provided upon booking — the kennel's serene off-road setting is part of the experience.
Whether visiting in summer for the kennel tour or spending a winter day on the trail, Alaska Mushing School delivers Anchorage's most authentic connection to the Iditarod's heart and soul. Book at alaskamushingschool.com.
