Description
Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers' Co-operative is one of the most singular retail experiences in Alaska — a small downtown Anchorage shop selling handknitted garments made from qiviut, the ultra-fine underwool combed from musk oxen and widely considered one of the softest natural fibers on earth. Finer than cashmere and warmer by weight than sheep's wool, qiviut is harvested from the underbelly of musk oxen during their spring shed without harm to the animals, making each item a sustainable Alaskan luxury product.
What makes Oomingmak extraordinary is the cooperative model behind every garment. The shop is owned and operated by a cooperative of more than 250 Alaska Native knitters from over 20 rural villages across Alaska — communities including Mekoryuk on Nunivak Island, Toksook Bay, Bethel, and others where hand-knitting has been part of community life for generations. Each knitter creates items according to a stitch pattern registered to and unique to her village, so the design on a hat knitted in Chevak is distinct from one produced in Kongiganak. Buying from Oomingmak connects a purchase directly to a specific indigenous community's textile tradition.
Products include hats, scarves, smoke rings (cowl-style neck warmers), stoles, and tunics in natural qiviut and qiviut-blend yarns. The color palette runs from ivory to warm brown and chocolate, with most items left undyed to preserve the fiber's exceptional softness. Prices reflect the rarity of qiviut and the skilled handwork involved — garments are among Alaska's most prized souvenirs and are purchased as heirloom pieces rather than casual gifts.
The shop is located at 604 H Street in downtown Anchorage, steps from the Anchorage Museum and the 5th Avenue Mall. Hours are seasonal, with the shop most reliably open through the summer tourist season. For current hours, product availability, and mail-order options, visit qiviut.com.
