Alaska Center for the Performing Arts

Alaska's premier performing arts venue with three theaters hosting Broadway shows, opera, symphony, and world-class entertainment

Description

The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts stands as Anchorage's cultural crown jewel, a $71 million architectural masterpiece that opened in 1988 and transformed downtown Anchorage into a world-class performing arts destination. Born from a community vision that began in the 1960s when local arts organizations advocated for a permanent home for the performing arts, the center represents twenty years of dedication to bringing professional entertainment to Alaska's largest city.

Designed by renowned New York architects Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates in collaboration with Livingston Slone of Anchorage, the facility encompasses an entire downtown block between 5th and 6th Avenues and G Street. The center houses three distinct performance venues: the magnificent 2,000-seat Evangeline Atwood Concert Hall for symphonic concerts, opera, and Broadway musicals; the versatile 777-seat Discovery Theatre perfect for mid-scale productions and flexible community events; and the intimate 372-seat Sydney Laurence Theatre, built within the walls of its predecessor and featuring dramatic asymmetrical seating with open side boxes.

The center's programming brings the world's finest entertainment to Alaska through CenterTix, the official box office serving over 200,000 patrons annually. Recent seasons have featured Broadway touring productions including Hamilton, Mean Girls, Beetlejuice, and Tina, while the Anchorage Opera, Alaska Symphony, and numerous local theater companies call these stages home. The facility's diverse programming spans comedy, dance, family shows, youth programs, spoken word events, and community gatherings.

Positioned in downtown's civic and cultural district alongside the Dena'ina Convention Center and near museums, restaurants, and hotels, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts serves as the focus of Anchorage's cultural life. The grand opening on December 15, 1988, featured Jay Leno, Diane Schuur, and the Count Basie Orchestra—setting a precedent for the world-class entertainment that continues to grace these stages, making this venue essential for anyone seeking Alaska's finest performing arts experiences.
