Description
Downtown Bicycle Rental has outfitted Anchorage visitors with bikes from the heart of the city for decades, operating at 333 W 4th Ave — a short pedal from the western terminus of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. The shop stocks more than 180 well-maintained bikes in nearly every style: hybrids, road bikes, mountain bikes, fat bikes, electric bikes, and tandems, plus a full selection of kids' bikes. Every rental includes a helmet, lock, panniers, trail map, and route suggestions from staff — everything needed to ride out the door and onto the trail within minutes.
The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is the most popular starting point for renters. This paved, mostly flat 11-mile path runs south from downtown along Knik Arm before looping back through Earthquake Park and westward toward the airport. On clear days, riders share the trail with long views of Denali and the Alaska Range. The terrain is gentle enough for beginners but long enough to reward experienced cyclists.
For visitors who want to get to higher ground, Downtown Bicycle Rental also operates the Flattop Mountain Shuttle from the same location. A 15-person van departs the shop at 12:15 pm and delivers hikers and cyclists to the Glen Alps Trailhead — the main access point for Flattop Mountain and Powerline Pass in Chugach State Park. The shuttle returns at 4:30 pm. Round-trip fare is $25; one-way with a bike on the van is $17. The service runs seasonally from late May through late August (May 22–August 22, 2026).
Bike rental rates run approximately $22–$25 for the first three hours on hybrid bikes, with lower per-hour rates after that; electric bikes, mountain bikes, and fat bikes are priced higher. The shop is open daily 11 am to 6 pm during the visitor season.
Whether you're rolling along the waterfront on a hybrid, exploring Far North Bicentennial Park on a mountain bike, or catching the shuttle up to the alpine, Downtown Bicycle Rental is the most accessible starting point for human-powered Anchorage exploration.
