Description
The world's only operating domestic musk ox farm sits on an 85-acre homestead just outside Palmer — a 45-minute drive north of Anchorage through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Founded in 1954 as a nonprofit dedicated to studying the domestication potential of Alaska's rugged Arctic ungulates, the farm now keeps more than 80 musk oxen and welcomes visitors year-round for guided walking tours.
Tours depart on the hour during operating hours and last roughly 45 minutes, taking small groups through paddocks where handlers introduce individual animals, explain herd dynamics, and demonstrate the hand-combing process that yields qiviut — the ultra-fine winter undercoat prized as one of the warmest natural fibers on earth. Spring visits bring calves, and summer guests often see animals at their most active. The visitor center, housed in a beautifully renovated red barn with a landmark silo, includes a small museum tracing the musk ox's natural history and the farm's conservation mission, plus a gift shop stocked with qiviut yarn, handknit garments, and locally made crafts.
Practical details: Summer hours run daily 10 AM–6 PM from the second Sunday in May through September 30, with the last tour departing at 5 PM. Off-season hours (October through early May) shift to Wednesday through Sunday with shorter windows — check muskoxfarm.org for the current schedule before visiting. Admission is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $8 for children ages 5–17. Reservations are recommended but walk-ins are accommodated when space allows. The farm is located about two miles east of downtown Palmer on Archie Road, just off the Glenn Highway.
For travelers heading toward the Matanuska Glacier or exploring the Mat-Su Valley, the Musk Ox Farm is an easy and deeply Alaskan detour. A single skein of raw qiviut hand-combed from one animal in a single season can sell for more than the equivalent weight in cashmere — which tells you something about just how rare and exceptional what's happening here really is.
