Description
The Earl R. Brown Auditorium serves as Alaska Pacific University's premier performance venue, housing 210 seats within the historic Grant Hall on APU's wooded 170-acre campus. Named for Earl Brown, this intimate auditorium has been the cultural heart of university life since APU's founding as Alaska Methodist University in 1957, continuing a legacy of educational excellence envisioned by Peter Gordon Gould, an Unangax̂ (Aleut) minister who believed Alaska needed indigenous leadership educated within the state.
Located within Grant Hall—whose cornerstone was laid in 1959 as one of APU's original buildings—the auditorium features state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment including LCD projectors and screens, creating an optimal environment for diverse performances. The venue regularly hosts university ensemble productions that pack the theater with enthusiastic audiences, TBA Theatre's professional season, Anchorage Opera performances, and visiting artists who benefit from the auditorium's excellent acoustics and intimate setting.
What sets the Earl Brown Auditorium apart is its unique role bridging university and community cultural life. As the only fully accredited private university in Alaska, APU brings together students, faculty, and Anchorage residents for performances ranging from student showcases to professional theater productions. The unassigned general admission seating creates a democratic, accessible atmosphere where audiences experience performances in close proximity to artists, fostering the kind of intimate artistic connection that larger venues cannot provide.
Situated just five minutes from downtown Anchorage at 4101 University Drive, the auditorium benefits from its location on APU's scenic campus with views of the Chugach Mountains. The heavily wooded setting creates a peaceful retreat from urban life, while the venue's position within Grant Hall places it at the historic center of Alaska's premier liberal arts institution.
Whether attending a university production featuring emerging talent or a professional performance by established artists, visitors experience Alaska's vibrant cultural scene in an intimate, thoughtfully designed space that celebrates both artistic excellence and educational mission.
