Description
JBER Polar Bowl is one of the more unusual bowling facilities in the Anchorage area: at 40 lanes, it's the largest Air Force bowling center in the United States, located at 7176 Fighter Drive on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The facility has been recently remodeled and serves the JBER military community, but access is restricted to active duty military, DoD civilians, their dependents, and authorized guests. General public access requires a sponsor with base access privileges.
The Facility
40 lanes makes this significantly larger than any of Anchorage's civilian bowling centers. The recent remodel means the infrastructure is current — updated scoring systems, comfortable seating, and modern lane equipment. The facility includes arcade games and a bar area, and the scale supports a robust leagues program running throughout the year for the JBER community.
Who Can Access
Active duty military personnel and their families have full access. DoD civilian employees assigned to JBER are also eligible. Retired military with valid identification can use military recreation facilities including bowling. Guests of authorized personnel can visit with a sponsor present. Visitors without military affiliation can't enter the base or access this facility independently.
Special Olympics and Community Events
JBER has hosted Special Olympics bowling tournaments at the Polar Bowl, extending the facility's use to athletes from the broader Anchorage community through organized events. These events are coordinated through Special Olympics Alaska and represent one of the few opportunities for non-military community access to the lanes.
Getting There
Access is through the JBER gates off Glenn Highway or Boniface Parkway. Valid military ID or DoD credentials are required at the gate. Contact the Polar Bowl directly at (907) 552-4108 for current hours and availability.
More to Do in Anchorage
Military families stationed at JBER have plenty of options nearby. Tikahtnu Commons is just off the Glenn Highway and has dining, retail, and a movie theater. The Anchorage Museum downtown is a strong pick for a day out with kids, and the Z.J. Loussac Public Library offers free programming and one of the best public spaces in the city.
