Description

The Alaska Native Heritage Center stands as Alaska's premier cultural destination, representing all Alaska Native cultures, peoples, and ways of life since opening in 1999. More than a traditional museum, this vibrant 26-acre cultural campus in Anchorage serves as a living center where visitors discover the rich traditions, languages, and arts of Alaska Native cultures through immersive programming and authentic experiences.

Located on the traditional territory of the Native Village of Eklutna, a Dena'ina Athabascan Tribe, the center anchors its mission in three core values: education, healing, and cultural perpetuation. The facility preserves and strengthens Alaska Native traditions while addressing historical trauma and promoting community wellness through culturally grounded programming.

The centerpiece experience features six authentic life-sized Native dwellings situated around beautiful Lake Tiulana, representing major cultural groups including the Dena'ina Log Home, Yup'ik/Cup'ik Qasgiq & Enet, Iñupiaq/St. Lawrence Island Yupik Qargi, Sugpiaq Ciqlluaq, Unangax̂ Ulax, and the Eyak/Tlingit/Haida/Tsimshian Clan House & Carving Shed. Each village site authentically recreates traditional structures alongside cultural belongings used in daily life.

Inside the main building, the newly updated Hall of Cultures showcases dynamic exhibits highlighting Alaska's five major cultural groups, while the Gathering Place hosts engaging presentations, traditional Alaska Native Games demonstrations, and captivating dance performances during summer months. The Ch'k'iqadi Gallery features authentic Alaska Native artwork supporting regional artists, and Café Di'eshchin offers refreshments in a welcoming environment.

Guided outdoor walking tours led by Alaska Native culture bearers provide deeper understanding of the 11 major Alaska Native cultures represented. Currently executing a $25 million expansion campaign, the center continues evolving as both a healing place and educational hub, offering accurate storytelling of Alaska Native history while supporting Indigenous-centered programming year-round.
