Campbell Creek Fishing

Urban salmon fishing adventure in the heart of Anchorage with convenient access points and boardwalk fishing platforms

Description

Campbell Creek offers a unique urban fishing experience right in the heart of Anchorage, where coho salmon runs meet city convenience. This meandering waterway provides accessible angling opportunities without leaving the metropolitan area, making it perfect for both seasoned anglers and families looking to experience Alaska's fishing culture.

The creek is primarily known for its coho (silver) salmon fishing, with approximately 3,800 silvers returning annually and about 1,200 caught by sport anglers each season. The fishing season opens July 14th from Dimond Boulevard upstream to Shelikof Street, with peak activity occurring in mid-to-late August. Early morning fishing, before the sun hits the water, typically produces the best results. Beyond salmon, anglers can also target rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in upstream sections, providing year-round fishing opportunities.

Campbell Creek features three easily accessible public fishing spots with dedicated parking and boardwalk platforms. The main access point sits on the north side of Dimond Boulevard, just west of Victor Road, featuring parking, a boardwalk structure, and upstream hiking trails. A second boardwalk at Folker Street offers barrier-free access, with wheelchair-accessible paved paths and extended season dates (August 1 through October 1). Additional parking is available at Taku-Campbell Lake park at the end of 76th Avenue and King Street.

What sets Campbell Creek apart is its role as Anchorage's premier urban fishery - a place where downtown office workers can cast a line during lunch breaks and families can introduce children to Alaska fishing traditions without venturing into the wilderness. The creek's location along the Campbell Creek Trail system also makes it ideal for combining fishing with hiking, biking, or wildlife viewing in this unique urban greenway.
