Description
Ship Creek offers the rare opportunity to catch wild Alaska salmon just minutes from downtown Anchorage. This urban fishing destination is famous for its king salmon runs from mid-May through July, with fish returning right through the heart of the city along railroad tracks and warehouse districts.
King salmon begin arriving in mid-May, with fishing picking up by late May and peaking in June. Coho salmon follow from August through mid-September, providing excellent fishing opportunities throughout the summer and fall. The creek is accessible from Ship Creek Avenue between downtown and the Air Force Base, with multiple access points along the railroad tracks and upstream walking paths.
The best success comes at slack high tide or 1-2 hours before and after high tide. Anglers can fish from gravel bars accessible via walking paths along the Ship Creek Trail bike path, or from the raised wooden platform behind the Comfort Inn for handicapped access. The Bait Shack, located on-site, provides everything needed: rod rentals, tackle, bait, waders, and Alaska fishing licenses ($15/day plus king salmon stamp). They also offer guided services for those wanting local expertise.
Facilities include onsite restrooms and parking areas near 1st Avenue and the Ship Creek Overlook. King salmon 20 inches or longer are limited to one per day with a combined annual limit of five. The industrial setting adds to the unique character of this urban fishing experience, where you can land trophy salmon while trains and planes pass overhead.
