Service Singletrack Trail System

Anchorage newest multi-use trail network with 6 miles of singletrack connecting Service High to Hilltop Ski Area

Description

The Service Singletrack Trail System is one of the newest and most exciting outdoor recreation additions to Anchorage. Located on the east side of town in the Hillside area, this innovative multi-line trail network connects Service High School to the Hilltop Ski Area, offering roughly six miles of purpose-built singletrack designed for hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners of all ability levels.

Phase 1 of the system is complete and open, featuring 2.5 miles of finished trail with multiple lines that accommodate everything from casual walkers to experienced mountain bikers looking for technical challenges. The trail design uses a stacked-loop approach, meaning you can choose shorter or longer routes depending on your time and fitness level. Different lines within the system offer varying difficulty, so beginners and advanced riders can use the same trailhead without competing for the same terrain.

The trails wind through a mix of boreal forest and open hillside, with views of the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet on clear days. The setting feels surprisingly wild for a trail system that starts within city limits. Moose sightings are common in the area, especially in early morning and evening, so stay alert and give wildlife plenty of space.

Access is straightforward. The most popular starting point is the Hilltop Ski Area parking lot off Abbott Road, which provides free parking and easy access to the trail network. From downtown Anchorage, the drive takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The trails are well-marked with signage at major intersections, though carrying a trail map on your phone is always a good idea for first-time visitors.

The system is managed by Singletrack Advocates, a well-established local advocacy organization that has been instrumental in building and maintaining trails across Anchorage. They organize volunteer trail days throughout the summer and fall, which are a great way to meet local riders and hikers while giving back to the trail community.

The trails are typically open from late May through October, depending on snow and ground conditions. Summer is the prime season, with long daylight hours making after-work rides and evening hikes easy. Mountain biking is the primary use, but the trails are open to all non-motorized users. Dogs are allowed but should be leashed on busy days.

For anyone looking for quality singletrack within easy reach of Anchorage, the Service Singletrack Trail System is a must-visit. It represents a significant investment in the city outdoor recreation infrastructure and fills a real gap in accessible, well-designed trail options on the east side of town.
