Description
Wei Restaurant finally brings authentic xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) to Anchorage, filling a long-standing gap in the city's Chinese dining scene. Located in the former LED Ultra Lounge space at 6th and I Street, this downtown gem opened in August 2025 under the experienced hands of Jun Shao and Hui Su, who previously operated the beloved Chinatown Restaurant for 10 years.
The name "Wei" means "taste" in Chinese, and that philosophy shines through in every handcrafted dumpling and bao bun made fresh daily. The modern, upscale-casual atmosphere features clean, chic décor that strikes the perfect balance between contemporary style and comfortable dining. Generous, shareable portions make it ideal for groups, while thoughtful vegan options ensure everyone at the table finds something delicious.
Signature dishes include the restaurant's celebrated xiaolongbao, where delicate dumpling skins hold rich, savory broth and tender pork filling. The Mapo Tofu delivers authentic Sichuan flavors with its silky texture and complex spice blend, while the Shrimp Fried Rice showcases classic technique with wok hei (breath of the wok) flavors. Don't miss the Peking duck or the tender beef short ribs, both prepared with modern touches that honor traditional Chinese cooking methods.
Wei Restaurant operates Tuesday through Sunday with lunch service from 11 AM to 3 PM and dinner from 5 PM to 10 PM, closing Mondays for rest. The downtown location offers convenient access to Anchorage's business district and nearby attractions, making it perfect for both business lunches and celebratory dinners.
After years without quality soup dumplings in Anchorage, Wei Restaurant represents a homecoming for the operators and a culinary gift to the community. It's the kind of neighborhood spot that becomes an instant local favorite, combining the comfort of familiar operators with the excitement of elevated Chinese cuisine that Anchorage has been craving.
