La Cabaña Mexican Restaurant

Family-owned Mexican cuisine in downtown Anchorage since 1999

Description

La Cabaña Mexican Restaurant has been at 312 E. 4th Ave in downtown Anchorage since 1953 — which means it predates Alaska statehood by six years. That makes it not just the oldest Mexican restaurant in Anchorage, but one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in the city, full stop. Patrons who first ate there in the early 1960s still return regularly. The continuity itself is the story.

The dining room reflects decades of consistent character: festive colors, blue and lavender chairs, blue booths, hanging plants, a full bar, and warm lighting that keeps the mood hospitable. The menu covers Mexican and American fare — enchiladas with chicken, cheese, or meat; fajitas; appetizers; soups and salads — alongside burgers, sandwiches, fried chicken, steak, and seafood. The tortilla chips arriving at the table are a ritualized part of the experience that longtime customers describe with genuine nostalgia. The margaritas have earned a devoted following of their own. Hours run Monday through Thursday 11:00 am to 9:30 pm, Friday 11:00 am to 10:30 pm, Saturday noon to 10:30 pm, and Sunday 11:00 am to 9:00 pm.

The banquet facilities accommodate up to 150 guests and are equipped with televisions, a projector and screen, lighting effects, a dance floor, and a full sound system — making La Cabaña a legitimate option for weddings, reunions, and corporate events in the heart of downtown. The 4th Avenue location sits central to Anchorage's downtown corridor, close to the performing arts center, the transit hub, and the major downtown hotels.

In a city that has rebuilt itself repeatedly — through earthquakes, economic cycles, and demographic shifts — La Cabaña's seven-plus decades of continuous operation represent something genuinely worth celebrating. It is living proof that Anchorage has a food culture with actual roots, and that some institutions older than the state itself still have a seat at the table.
