Altura Bistro

Chef-owned New American bistro with Pacific Northwest flair and house-made sourdough in midtown Anchorage

Description

Altura Bistro brings a chef-owned sensibility to midtown Anchorage, occupying the space and spirit left by the beloved Marx Bros. Cafe. Under a chef-owner trained at the Apicius International School of Hospitality in Florence, Italy, the restaurant delivers New American cuisine with a Pacific Northwest emphasis — refined technique applied to Alaska's exceptional raw ingredients.

The menu reflects both the chef's European training and a deep respect for what the region produces. Troll-caught white king salmon, Australian Wagyu ribeye, and a signature sweet prawn bisque anchor a menu that changes with the seasons. House-made sourdough ciabatta arrives at the table warm, setting the tone for a meal that values craft at every step. The kitchen balances ambition with accessibility — dishes are technically accomplished without being fussy, presented with care but never over-styled.

The dining room carries the intimate, personal character that defines chef-owned establishments at their best. This is not a restaurant driven by corporate strategy or investor expectations — it is a kitchen led by someone who trained in Florence and chose to cook in Alaska, and that perspective shapes everything from the menu to the pacing of the evening.

Altura Bistro serves lunch Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and dinner Wednesday through Thursday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Friday through Saturday from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Located at 4240 Old Seward Highway, Suite 20, in midtown Anchorage. Parking is available in the adjacent lot.

For Anchorage diners who remember what Marx Bros. Cafe meant to the city's dining scene, Altura Bistro carries that torch — a chef-driven restaurant where the food speaks for itself.
