Description

Located on the south shore of Lake Hood—the world’s busiest seaplane base—the Alaska Aviation Museum in Anchorage offers an immersive journey through the state's rich aviation history. Established in 1988, the museum showcases over 30 vintage aircraft, interactive exhibits, and artifacts that highlight the pivotal role aviation has played in Alaska's development.

Visitors can explore four hangars filled with meticulously restored aircraft, including the 1928 Stearman C2B, which conducted the first landing and rescue on Mt. McKinley in 1932, and the 1943 Grumman G-44 “Super Widgeon,” an amphibious plane used during World War II. The museum also features a 1947 Republic RC-3 Seabee and a 1955 Piper “Super Cub” PA-18-150, both integral to Alaska's bush flying heritage.

One of the museum's unique attractions is the Virtual Reality Flight Simulator, allowing guests to experience the thrill of flying over Alaska's diverse landscapes. Additionally, the Cecil Higgins Restoration Hangar provides a behind-the-scenes look at ongoing aircraft restoration projects, such as the WWII-era Curtiss P-40.

The museum's location offers more than just indoor exhibits; the Seybert Tower provides panoramic views of Lake Hood, where visitors can watch seaplanes take off and land, accompanied by live radio transmissions from the control tower.

Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the summer months, the Alaska Aviation Museum is a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Admission is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and military personnel, $11 for children aged 3–13, and free for children under two. Family passes are also available.

Whether you're captivated by historic aircraft, interested in Alaska's unique aviation stories, or simply looking for an engaging experience, the Alaska Aviation Museum offers a compelling glimpse into the state's airborne adventures.
