Description
F Street Station has anchored downtown Anchorage since 1944, making it one of the city's oldest bars still operating in its original location. Born as the Mur-Mac Lounge, the bar survived the catastrophic 1964 Good Friday earthquake — which leveled much of downtown Anchorage — and was rebuilt on the same F Street corner where it still stands today. The current owners took over in 1983 and added a full kitchen in 1988, evolving the classic neighborhood bar into the beloved bar and grill it is today.
The kitchen leans hard into fresh Alaskan seafood. The beer-battered halibut sandwich is the signature — locals and visitors alike debate whether anything in Anchorage does it better. Sourdough crab sandwiches, king crab legs, grilled halibut salads, and king salmon round out the seafood side of the menu, while Alaskan beer cheese soup, moose chili, and reindeer sausage bring distinctly Northern flavors to every visit. Weekend brunch adds eggs Benedict to the mix for those who time their arrival right.
The bar pours a strong lineup of locally brewed drafts alongside cocktails and wine. Live music from local bands on Friday and Saturday evenings fills the small, lively space. The room seats around 40 to 50 guests at high-top tables and padded swivel stools — expect a wait on busy nights during summer. Regulars enjoy one of Alaska's great bar traditions: a perpetual block of Tillamook Sharp Cheddar displayed on the bar with a grater and napkins, freely available to anyone who sits down.
Unusually for a bar blocks from downtown, F Street Station has become a beloved gathering point for Anchorage's aviation community. The walls are plastered floor-to-ceiling with airline patches, crew stickers, and aviation memorabilia contributed by cargo pilots, bush pilots, and airline crews over eight decades. The vibe is casual, the regulars are fiercely loyal, and the history runs deep — this is downtown Anchorage at its most authentic.
