Description

Wonjo Korean Cuisine is a midtown Anchorage institution celebrated for its house-made tofu dishes and deeply flavored Korean home cooking. Originally known as Wonjo Tofu House, the restaurant has built a devoted following among Anchorage's Korean food enthusiasts with bowls of sundubu jjigae and kimchi jjigae that rival what you'd find in larger mainland cities.

The menu reads like a tour of traditional Korean home cooking: soft tofu stews, spicy braised tofu with chili-forward umami depth, beef bulgogi, galbi short ribs, and mackerel — all arriving alongside a generous spread of banchan side dishes. The sundubu jjigae, a bubbling spicy soft tofu stew loaded with seafood, beef, and kimchi, has become a standout that draws regulars back week after week.

Banchan — the small side dishes that arrive before the main course — are a mark of a Korean restaurant's authenticity. At Wonjo, the banchan spread sets the tone: properly fermented kimchi, seasoned spinach, pickled daikon, and soybean sprouts delivered as a matter of course with every order. It's the kind of attention to the full meal, not just the main dish, that separates Korean food done right from Korean food done quickly. The midtown strip mall exterior belies the quality and care inside — this is one of Anchorage's most rewarding dining experiences.

Wonjo Korean Cuisine is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 10 p.m., closed Mondays. Located on W Fireweed Lane in midtown Anchorage.
