Description

Alaska's Premier Urban Coastal Trail Experience

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail stands as one of America's most spectacular coastal trails, gently winding eleven miles from downtown Anchorage to Kincaid Park Chalet along Alaska's pristine coastline. Recognized as Anchorage's most popular recreational destination, this fully paved multi-use trail provides year-round access for walking, jogging, biking, and winter skiing.

Summer visitors enjoy extraordinary panoramic views encompassing downtown Anchorage's skyline, the dramatic Chugach Mountains, majestic Denali (Mt. McKinley), Mount Susitna (Sleeping Lady), and Fire Island's distinctive silhouette. The trail's relatively level northern section provides comfortable access for all fitness levels, while the scenic southern portion winds through birch and evergreen forests.

Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, particularly along the southern half where moose, diverse bird species, and occasional other Alaska wildlife create authentic wilderness encounters within an urban setting. The trail's design maintains natural habitat corridors while providing safe, accessible recreation for residents and visitors alike.

As part of the regional 32-mile "Moose Loop" trail network, the coastal trail connects seamlessly with Chester Creek Trail, Campbell Creek Trail, and Ship Creek Trail, enabling extended exploration of Anchorage's comprehensive trail system. The southern terminus at Kincaid Park offers additional recreational amenities including soccer fields, disc golf, fishing opportunities, and archery facilities.

Experienced outdoor enthusiasts and casual walkers equally appreciate the trail's exceptional maintenance, safety features, and interpretive opportunities that showcase Anchorage's unique position between urban sophistication and pristine wilderness.
