Description

Nestled within 110 acres of serene boreal forest in Anchorage's Far North Bicentennial Park, the Alaska Botanical Garden offers a captivating blend of cultivated beauty and natural wilderness. Established in 1993, this nonprofit garden showcases over 1,100 species of hardy perennials, including approximately 150 native Alaskan plants, thriving amidst spruce and birch trees.

Visitors can explore a variety of themed gardens interconnected by scenic trails. Highlights include Lile’s Garden, featuring a Gold Medal Peony Collection and vibrant primroses; the Herb Garden, displaying a diverse array of culinary and medicinal plants; and the Rock Garden, home to over 350 alpine species from regions such as Alaska, Scandinavia, and the Himalayas.

The Anchorage Heritage Garden offers a glimpse into early 20th-century homesteading practices, with heirloom vegetables and flowers cultivated in traditional styles. For families and nature enthusiasts, the Lowenfels-Hoersting Family Nature Trail provides an accessible 1.1-mile loop through the forest, offering opportunities to observe local wildlife and native flora.

Beyond its gardens, the Alaska Botanical Garden serves as a hub for education and community engagement. Programs include guided tours, workshops, summer camps, and seasonal events like the Boreal Garden & Arts Fest. The garden also participates in conservation efforts, such as the North American Orchid Conservation Center, focusing on the preservation of native orchid species.

Open year-round, the garden's summer hours (May 24–September 14) are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $14 for adults, $10 for students, seniors, and military personnel, and free for members and children under six.

Whether you're a botany enthusiast, a casual gardener, or seeking a peaceful retreat, the Alaska Botanical Garden offers a rich tapestry of Alaska's horticultural heritage and natural splendor.
